ROASTERY

ROASTERY_ENGELBERG_Strich.jpg

The Roastery in Engelberg started as a passion project by siblings Oscar and Sophia in 2015.  There was no one else roasting coffee in Engelberg and the way they saw it, every village should have a local bakery, a local butcher, a local cheese shop and of course a local coffee roaster.

Ragnar, their father and lifelong coffee professional, introduced them to the world of coffee at a very young age. Out on a sunny porch in the summer of 1994 he set up his small Probat and started roasting coffee samples from all over the world. Seduced by the smell and the sounds of beans, cracking, the journey towards roasting coffee for a living began.

Starting on a 2kg machine in 2015, in a 25m2 shop in Engelberg, the business steadily grew. By 2019 the need for a bigger roast machine became  undeniable. As luck would have it the stationery and bookshop, a legendary institution of a shop , became available. There was finally room for a larger  coffee roaster. On 18th December 2019 the new Roastery | Papeterie on Dorfstrasse 9 in Engelberg opened its doors, a place where you can watch us roast coffee, browse through nostalgic books, shop high quality stationery or just come in for a coffee and a chat.

PAPETERIE

The papeterie and bookshop on Dorfstrasse 9 in Engelberg was founded by Robert Hess in 1888 and provided Engelberg and its guests with stationery goods, books, sports photography and souvenirs. The business was an instant success, survived two world wars and came to stay in the Hess family for two generations.

In 1971 the Höchli family took over the well established business and also kept it running in the family for two generations with Alex Höchli being in charge since 1992. Almost 30 years and an internet boom later the time for a new generation had come. Only a couple of years away from retirement, Alex handed over the responsibility for the renowned shop on Dorfstrasse to the Wetterblad family in 2019.

The shop was traditionally renovated and Roastery Engelberg moved in creating the unique blend of  coffee roaster, stationery shop and bookstore under one roof. Today Roastery | Papeterie Engelberg on Dorfstrasse 9 is the relaxed heart of all operations and a place where you can browse through nostalgic books, shop high quality stationery all whilst enjoying a cup of deliciously prepared coffee.

BOOKSHOP

This local bookshop has managed to survive for over 130 years despite the fact that many independent bookshops fade away as a result of the internet boom and new technologies. Much is thanks to the Engelberg community dedicated to supporting local shops, but significantly because of  the unique assortment of Engelberg books and documents.

A visit to an independent bookshop is always an experience and the bookshop in Engelberg is no exception. With a diverse selection of books, from bestsellers to antiques, historic novels to feminist cartoons and a classic, beautiful assortment of childrens books, its definitely worth spending an extra 15 min browsing our bookshop.
